Space Scientist

Donna Shirley is a small-town girl from Oklahoma that took a keen interest in flying planes at an early age. She entered college under the aeronautical engineering program when it was still an all-male career. She then spent 35 years as an aerospace engineer with 32 of those years at NASA in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. There, her positions have ranged from Project Engineer for the Cassini mission to Saturn to Manager of Automation and Robotics with one of her most notable positions being the head of the Mars Exploration Program. Today, she continues to advise NASA and is developing new initiatives for space exploration including a plan to make travel to the International Space Station an every day event.

IRA MELLMAN

Cell Biologist

Dr. Ira Mellman was the Sterling Professor of Cell Biology and Immunology at Yale University. While Mellman entered college to become a musician, he ended up completing a degree in cell biology. He then went on to do a graduate degree in Human Genetics at UC Berkeley and a post-doc fellowship at Rockefeller University in New York City. Mellman uses a combination of methods to understand complex functions of cell biology which has revealed basic biological mechanisms that help in diagnosing and treating common diseases such as diabetes, cancer, etc. In the spring of 2007, Ira Mellman joined Genentech, a leading biotechnology research company, as Vice President of Oncology.
