jacques d'amboise

Ballet Master

Jacques is the founder of the National Dance Institute, an organization that brings dance and art to inner-city youth in New York. He grew up in Washington Heights in NYC in the 1940s and his mother had him take ballet classes to get him off the streets. He ended up pursuing dance for the next 30 years becoming a principal dancer for the NYC Ballet and working with top choreographers like George Balanchine. As a ballet dancer, Jacques D’Amboise established himself as one of the premier dancers of his or any era. He has won almost every major arts award including a National Medal of Arts, a Macarthur Grant and been honored by the Kennedy Center. Today, he spends most of his time working with students at the National Dance Institute (NDI) which he founded.
